“Tell me about a time in your job/education you had to overcome an obstacle.”
“In high school all my friends were older than me except for Miss Jenii, but Jenii was always very popular whereas I was shy- like kinda a wallflower, we were only really friends because of the swim team. Anyways when my older friends that I was closer with all graduated I only really knew Jenii who had tons of friends. So outside of school, work and swim I pretty much only spent time with Nana which, as much as I love Nana, made me feel like a loser. But she always told me that I don’t have to be friends with everyone but I should be nice to everyone and she also told me that knowing that I’m a nice person will help me to not be so miserable in school. Overcoming that obstacle really helped teach me a lesson about attitude and how it really shapes everything you do.”
“Tell me about a time in your education/job that you are most grateful for.”
“Growing up with Papa in the Navy we moved around a lot and moved to a lot of different types of places. I was born in Illinois, then we moved to Washington state, and then to Guam, which I had never even heard of before we moved there, and then we ended up in Connecticut. And When Papa started with the NCIS we didn’t live there but we got to visit places like The Philippines and Japan. Going through all those different school systems which were from what I remember very different wherever we went and plus growing up with Nana and Papa who went to school in New York City all their lives we really got a taste of a lot of different cultures and different types of people.”

“Growing up in New York City my family, we really didn’t have that much money. So you know when I got to high school I had to start working which I really didn’t want to, I wanted to play basketball in high school but I knew that working in the long run would be the smarter decision. But at the time that was a big decision for me to make between working and basketball but my dad eventually talked some sense into me and said I was a lot more likely to go to college with the extra money from working than by getting a basketball scholarship.”
“Tell me about a time in your education/job that you are most grateful for.”
“What I’m most grateful for in my education is definitely how I even was able to go to college. I went to a public high school in Inwood, Manhattan and then I got to go to Seton Hall University in New Jersey. So it was awesome that I got to go to college at all but going somewhere not where I grew up was a great learning experience and it really helped me grow up.”
Dad

“Growing up when Grampy was in the navy thankfully we didn’t have to move much but Grampy did have to go away for work a lot. When I was little that was very hard and I didn’t realize until I was an adult but it definitely took a toll on my grades and behavior when I was a kid in school. It wasnt really an obstacle I overcame in school but I think schools have come a long way in providing extra care or program and things of that nature for kids who deal with stuff outside of the classroom.”

“All four years I swam at Southern [Southern Connecticut State University] and was a captain my senior year. Being a part of a team and being a captain later on, it taught me almost as many life skills as college in general did. I guess through my entire school career I’ve been a little more thankful for the extra stuff I did like sports and band because I felt like I got more out of it, like learned more how to socialize and behave in the real world.”
Artifact 3: Remix Project

Reflection On Artifacts
These artifacts from my time taking this course are telling of the different ways my skills as a writer can be put into use. The citations are to be expected of a writer but adding the annotations was helpful for extra practice in making sure my thoughts are clearly lined up before writing and that my research is actually helping defend my point of view. Making transcripts of an interview was a new experience for me and helped build my confidence in interviewing people and how to use excerpts from interviews in my writing. The infographic I made for my remix project was also new to me and taught me how to use images to convey an idea and how to get information across in a more condensed manner.
When I used different technologies or media in this course I found that the design plan for the assignment needed to be adjusted. For example when doing the remix project I was taking the same information I had from my Humans of Education project but needed to drastically change how I presented it. With the infographic I had to carefully choose what text and images to include since space was limited.
When choosing which artifacts to include in my curation I wanted to include ones that were different forms of writing/presenting information. I did this to show how my time taking this course I learned about a broad variety of ways to express an idea.
